Steps of E-Discovery
Are you facing a case or situation where you need ediscovery? Every company in business today needs to be familiar with it and what it is just in case. The more you can inform yourself on ediscovery and the laws regarding it, the better off you will be. So do you know how ediscovery is performed?

What are the different steps involved in the processes of ediscovery? Every case is different and can vary a bit but there are some basic steps that will remain the same in every case when it comes to collection of electronic evidence.

The basic steps are:
  1. Strategy
  2. Collection
  3. Preparation
  4. Review
  5. Production
These five steps are basically the framework for your ediscovery efforts and reducing the risks of electronic discovery. If you anticipate possible litigation or investigation, you will first want to come up with a strategy. If you are not familiar with ediscovery, you might want to seek the help of a professional and an expert in the field to help you with your strategy.

The next step in the process will be the collection of data. There are different ways of doing this and if you are concerned with a possible lawsuit you might be better off to hire professionals to collect the data for you. If not, and you opt to do it yourself, just keep in mind that you might have to defend your collection methods later in court.

Next you will need to prepare the data and evidence for use. If the evidence is not prepared properly, it can lead to problems later on for you, especially if you have to go to court regarding some issue. The evidence will then be reviewed and produced. Careful handling of evidence during all the steps is very important.
