Preventing Data Loss
Data recovery is needed when you experience data loss. This is a devastating experience that many of us have probably been through. Whether due to:
  • Mechanical failure
  • Physical damage
  • Normal wear and tear
  • Malware and/or viruses
  • User error
Or some other reason, you can be one of many people that lose their important data. The good news is that in 80-90% of cases of data loss, the data can be recovered. Even if you accidentally delete your files, they can be recovered and restored. Of course, it is always a much better option to try to prevent data loss in the first place. Some ways to do this are:
  • Keep hard copies of important documents
  • Use a secondary hard drive
  • Always save back up copies
  • Try to avoid user error
  • Be careful of email attachments
  • Use updated virus protection software
  • Look for warning signs of data loss or harddrive failure
    • Clicking hard drive
    • Blue screen
    • System reboots
    • Error messages
    • No operating system found
    • Etc
The most important rule for preventing data loss is BACKUP filing. When you have extra copies, you will be okay if one source or one hard drive becomes damaged or corrupted.

You should always make and keep backups of all your important data, programs, etc that you have on your hard drive. You might do this by making CDs or saving onto a zip drive. Or you might have an external hard drive which you connect to your computer as a means of saving data. In fact, external hard drives are excellent because many are fireproof and damage proof and even come with back up safety features and roll-back options on them.
